حظي مختار الصحاح من بين معاجم كثيرة بشهرة و تداول واسعين. ومع أن مختار الصحاح في حقيقة الأمر ليس سوىمختصر قي علم اللغة،جمعه الرازي من كتاب الصحاح للجوهري، وضم إليه كثيرا من الفوائد، إلا أن هذا المختصر فاق الأصل شهرة وشيوعا، وذلك لأن الرازي استطاع أن يقتصر في مختار الصحاح على ما يحتاج إليه قارئ العربية مبتدئا كان أو باحثا، و ابتعد به عن الإسهاب و الإطناب، و جنبه عويص اللغة و غريبها، وابقى لغته في دائرة المتداول و الشائع ضمن تكثيف متميز للعبارة، وانتقاء بارع للشهد و المثل حفظا له هذا الألق المتجدد. ومختار الصحاح فضلاعن وظيفته المعجمية المعروفة معجم يبحث كثيرا في مدلول الكلمات وأصولها و قواعدها، كما يستطيع القارئ أن يرصد من خلاله تطور اللغة تاريخيا و ثقافيا و اجتماعيا. أضف إلى ذلك عنايته بضبط الأفعال وتصريفها، و ضبط عين المضارع بشكل خاص. وكذلك ضبط الصادر السماعية، وبيان ماله أكثر من مصدر واحد. كما أنه يميز اللازممن المتعدي، ويبين حرف الجر الذي يتعدى إليه كل فعل من الأفعال. ولا يفوته أن يعرب بغض الأدوات والمفردات التي لهاأعراب متميز أو موضع خلاف بين المعربين. بالإضافة إلى أن هذا الإصدار الجديد يقدم لقرئ العربية طبعة منقحة و مدققة بقدر كبير من التوثيق و التحقيق، واعتمد في كتابة الهمزة المتطرفة و المتوسطة القواعد الإملائية التي تلتزم بها بلاد الشام، كما ثبتت الباء منقوطة تمييزا لها عن الألف المقصورة.
